ROLE concept & design YEAR 2012

How can you translate poetry? Not only the actual content, meaning and significance of the characters, but also the rhetorical stylistic devices, the formal structure of words and the phonetics are strongly influenced by the linguistic and cultural environment in which poetry is created. It is not possible transferring these aspects into another language without distinction. Therefore, the translation of poetry is a big challenge. Over a long period of time the translator, mostly an author himself, often deals with the poet and his work, which he then translates into his own language.

Some is lost — some is added — something new is created. The standpoints, which are the deciding criteria for a translation, vary within the theory of translation. Translating this topic and making it spatially experienceable is the subject of this diploma thesis.

The realisation of the exhibition concept took place during the poets' event "Poetry" in 2011, which is organized by the Kulturamt Münster, in "Stadthausgalerie" Münster. For a month the different aspects of this multifaceted topic were presented weekly during this event.
